Needles, cups, camera, action!

integrative medicine, neck and back pain, spasms, videos

[Note: This is not a paid advertisement. But it is an act of adventure-sharing.]

Last weekend, I had a terrific visit to CommUnity Acupuncture & Massage, where David Gorski performed acupunture and cupping on me.

The whole thing was captured on video by talented videographer Alistair Dunnington. (The video’s being edited; stay tuned for the final work.)

Most of you are familiar with acupuncture, so I’ll dive right into what’s foreign: cupping therapy.

Cupping — aka mysofascial release — aka what all the Olympic swimmers are doing — is basically a “reverse massage”. Specially-shaped cups made of plastic or glass are placed upon the skin to create a suction, which pulls myofascial tissue to create increased bloodflow, muscle movement, and relief. A more thorough oveview of cupping is here.

How’d it work for me? It went swimmingly.

Once David suctioned those cups to my back and moved ’em around on my skin, I felt immediate relief in my thoracic capacity (that’s my back), where I’d been experiencing some tension.*

The cupping provided an added bonus of overall mind/body relaxation.

You, too, can tryout cupping and acupuncture. ComUnity Acu offers “affordable health services for all”. Click here for details.

Much gratitude to CommUnity Acupuncture & Massage founders Nancy & Robert Evans for opening your doors to me.

And a mega-thanks to the creative, skilled videographer, Alistair Dunnington. I highly recommend him!

83,000 brain scans: lessons learned

brain, memory, music therapy, Neurorehabilitation, videos

22 years
83,000 brain scans
from 93 countries

Lesson learned?

  • You are not stuck with the brain you have.
  • Brains can be rehabilitated.
  • You can make it better.

“When you have the privilege of changing someone’s brain, you not only change his or her life, you have the opportunity to change generations to come.” — Dr. Daniel Amen.

Amen. Aye, men.

Want to retrain your brain? Checkout Learning Rx in Fort Collins, led by Mike Winchell. He’s the Program Director. Learning Rx provides 1:1 brain training for people, ages 0-100.

When Mike’s not running the show at Learning Rx, you’ll find him fine-tuning his skills as guitarist in KD & The Painkillers*, a local band (I’m also a member).

*We’re performing this weekend at Island Grill in Fort Collins on Friday & Saturday eve. Please stop by to see our brains at work!

Dementia Village: a revolution in dementia care facilties

dementia, videos

“Free to live in the moment, until they take their last breath.” Dementia Village and other special places are setting new standards for dementia care: separate yet open communities with more freedom and fewer barriers, where residents lead normal, fun-filled lives. As these dementia care models expand globally, hopefully the increased competition among facilities will bring down costs elsewhere in the world. I hope the US catches on soon.

Pi Day on the (Pi)ano

Totally rational math nerds: have you heard? Today is National Pi Day, in honor of the somewhat odd, irrational number of Pi. That’s 3.14etc. aka π. Let’s expand our minds by entering The Matrix to enjoy the digits of Pi on the Pi(ano):
